Elke Porter: A Pillar of the German Business Community in Canada
Elke Porter has spent decades fostering connections and building bridges within the German-speaking community in Western Canada. Her unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting German heritage, culture, and business has made her a recognizable figure in the German business community. From her early days organizing children’s programs to her current role as a networking facilitator, Elke’s contributions are as varied as they are impactful.
A Decade with the German Canadian Business Association
For ten years, Elke served as the Secretary for the German Canadian Business Association (GCBA), a role that positioned her at the heart of the German business network in Canada. During her tenure, she worked tirelessly to support the association’s mission of connecting German-speaking professionals, promoting trade, and fostering a sense of community. Her responsibilities included organizing events, managing communications, and building relationships with key stakeholders, both locally and internationally.
Launching the Westcoast International Networking Klub (WINK)
In 2024, Elke took her passion for connecting people to the virtual space by founding the Westcoast International Business Club. This initiative provided a platform for professionals from diverse industries to collaborate, share ideas, and grow their networks. By 2025, the club evolved into the Westcoast International Networking Klub (WINK), reflecting its broader emphasis on fostering meaningful relationships beyond business. WINK has since become a hub for individuals interested in cross-cultural communication, international travel, and business development.
Early Contributions to German Heritage
Elke’s journey as a community leader began when she moved to Australia in 1995. Working as a substitute in various childcare facilities, she discovered the Johannes Gutenberg German School in Ryde, a suburb of Sydney. From 1995 to 1997, she worked as a Preschool Instructor/Substitute before applying for and becoming the authorized Supervisor when the Swiss Principal returned to Switzerland. Elke actively participated in team-building and special events while leading this exclusive private preschool. The school has since evolved into the German International School Sydney, expanding to include Grades 11 and 12, a boarding program, and a new campus.
After returning to Canada in 1997, Elke founded a German preschool and organized German children’s playgroups. Her commitment to nurturing the next generation of German Canadians was further demonstrated by her initiative, the Deutsche Kindergruppe, hosted at St. Mark’s Church. These programs provided a space for children to connect with their cultural roots and build a foundation in the German language.
Publishing and Journalism Endeavors
Elke has been a prolific writer and editor, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of German culture in Canada. She edited the Swiss Herald Newsletter for the Swiss Society and has published three distinct German Canadian magazines. Her ongoing work with the Westcoast International German News Blog, which she has been writing, interviewing, and editing since 2007, serves as a vital resource for the community. Additionally, Elke writes for the WBN News at the German Canadian Desk and contributes to the Kitsilano Edition, further extending her reach and influence.
Author of “75 German-Speaking Influential People in Western Canada”
Elke’s dedication to showcasing the achievements of the German-speaking community is evident in her book series, 75 German-Speaking Influential People in Western Canada. This two-part series highlights the stories and accomplishments of individuals who have made significant contributions to the region. Through these books, Elke not only celebrates their successes but also inspires others to engage with and support the community.
