Vancouver Opera is thrilled to launch its 65th season with the much-anticipated presentation of “Flight,” a contemporary opera masterpiece by the esteemed composer Jonathan Dove. Scheduled for three exclusive showings on February 8, 13, and 16, 2025, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, this production promises to captivate audiences with a unique blend of humor, emotion, and unforgettable music. Inspired by the remarkable true story of Mehran Karimi Nasseri—the Iranian refugee who lived in a Paris airport for 18 years—”Flight” offers a narrative that resonates with themes of resilience and human connection.
The production boasts an outstanding Canadian creative team, including acclaimed director Morris Panych, who brings a fresh visionary approach to the stage, alongside set designer Ken MacDonald, costume designer Dana Osborne, and lighting designer Alan Brodie. The result is a visually stunning depiction of an airport’s dynamic and transitory world, setting the perfect backdrop for this modern operatic tale. Conductor Leslie Dala leads the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, navigating Dove’s intricate and lively score that echoes the bustling, vibrant life of an airport terminal.
“Flight” comprises an engaging ensemble of characters, from The Refugee, played by Cameron Shahbazi in his debut with Vancouver Opera, to colorful figures like The Controller and The Stewardess. Their intertwined stories unfold amidst the chaos of a storm-induced delay, inviting audiences to explore a tapestry of emotions and experiences. With its exhilarating storytelling and musical brilliance, “Flight” stands out as a must-see event, marking a high point in Vancouver’s cultural calendar. Whether you’re a seasoned opera enthusiast or experiencing opera for the first time, “Flight” is sure to inspire, entertain, and leave a lasting impression.
